Just out of curiosity, how does Mike’s Solitaire firing compare to Christine’s Full House cleaning?

The Runaround: Mike and George Miss Each Other

Posted by azi on February 15, 2006

5-9 a.m. Milano senior fellow Sharon Lerner starts the first of two reports on WNYC about affordable health care and childcare.

10 a.m. Tom Suozzi talks joins a Brookings Institute discussion in D.C. about First Suburbs.

10:30 a.m. Yvette Clarke and others storm the City Hall steps to condemn “bigoted” remarks made on Hot 97. Then, in a totally unrelated matter, calls for an investigation into payola schemes at radio stations.

11 a.m. In a case of sheer coincidence, Mike Bloomberg will make an announcement at a Battery Park restaurant at the exact same time George Pataki makes an announcement on Governor’s Island.   In case you forgot, Mike is fighting with Republicans in Albany, and Pataki is hoping people forget he is a Republican in Albany.

Also at 11 a.m. Bill Thompson (in a pre-mayoral move?) calls for property tax rebates for seniors.

11:30-12:45 Immigrants rights advocates march to City Hall. Wonder if Mike will be back by then?

4 p.m. Greg Meeks and others launch the Middle East Economic Partnership Caucus.

Birthdays, Brides and Upgrades

Posted by azi on February 14, 2006

Happy birthday to mayor Mike, who turns 64 today. His public schedule includes remarks at a Valentine’s gala later tonight at the Rainbow room. Fun.

And for folks celebrating today’s other major holiday, here is something to enjoy: a bridal blog.

For the politically minded that need some attention today, here are sites for conservative dating, single liberal men, and everyone else.
As for this site, 51st State is celebrating its first week of, uh, freedom by tinkering with its design and posting on a slower than usual pace.

Mike Does Polo, White House No-Show

Posted by azi on February 8, 2006

From Women’s Wear Daily:

“Bloomberg, who was seated between Ricky Lauren [wife of Polo’s Ralph Lauren] and David Lauren [Ralph’s son], isn’t a common front row fixture at fashion shows, but the designer and the Mayor are said to be friends, so when Lauren told Bloomberg about his show, His Honor had to come.”

Simply had to.

Apparently that’s not exactly how Mike felt about the guy in the White House, whose reception he couldn’t attend last night. As Mike explained to reporters yesterday, it wasn’t politics. It was personal.

I will say that tonight after the- I finish work at the Throgs Neck Civic Association, today happens to be my girlfriend’s birthday and I’m going to take her out to dinner tonight so we’ll do that and that has to be a very high priority on my list of things to do.”

No Hablo with Addabbo?

Posted by azi on February 8, 2006

Whoever in Mike’s office is whispering about Joe Addabbo‘s possible senatorial race hasn’t told him about it yet. (Which is okay because Joe doesn’t seem to mind.)

In fact, the whole scuttlebutt about this race is based on Mike’s problem with Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno and Senator Serph Maltese, Joe said.

When asked if that made him a pawn, Joe replied, “I would be a pawn if I said I’m running. and I’m not going to do that [yet].”

Speaking of pawns and pieces, Addabbo’s longtime chief of staff Frank Gulluscio has taken a new job as District Manager of Community Board 6 located…in Serph’s district. Hmmmm.

Joe said the move was made two weeks ago, before he learned of his rumored race against Serph from a Times reporter.

Somebody call this guy.

Crossfire

Posted by azi on February 8, 2006

The AP is reporting a prominent gun activist is taking aim at Joe Bruno because the Senate Republicans have  “become more Democrat than the Democrats.”

That would put gun activist Gerald Preiser in the same boat as Mike Bloomberg who has a (fictional?) beef with the NRA but a (pretty real) problem with Bruno.

Strange bedfellows indeed.
